The Kunsthistorisches Museum

Of all Vienna’s museums, the Kunsthistorisches Museum on Ringstrasse still outshines them all. It’s one of the world’s greatest collections of Old Masters – comparable with the Hermitage or Louvre. An unrivalled collection of sixteenth-century paintings by Bruegel the Elder particularly draws the crowds, while the Peter Paul Rubens collection is also very strong and works by Vermeer and Caravaggio are worth seeking out. A number of Greek and Roman antiquities add breadth and variety. Set aside several hours at least – there is also an excellent café; a particularly impressive spot for a slice of cake.
