Heading west of San Cristóbal towards Uspantán the road passes through an unstable chunk of mountainous terrain that’s prone to landslides. Hourly Cobán–Uspantán microbuses ply the route, but a hair-raising section involves inching along a precipitous slope; services may not run during heavy rains. West of the Río Negro bridge the highway is paved and in good shape. If you’re driving, consider the long detour via Guatemala City.
