Our favourite things to do in Glasgow

Set on the banks of the mighty River Clyde, this former industrial giant can seem less than enticing as you approach. However, after a little time exploring visitors will find a city that is, in its own idiosyncratic way, a cultured and dynamic place well worth getting to know. Necropolis: an elegantly crumbling graveyard on a city centre hill behind the ancient cathedral, with great views.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum: a splendid civic collection of art and artefacts in a Gothic red-sandstone palace in the city’s lively West End.

Clydeside: the river that made Glasgow. Walk or cycle along it, take a boat on it, cross a bridge over it, or get a view of it from the new Riverside Museum.

Burrell Collection: an inspired and eclectic art collection displayed in a harmonious purpose-built museum in Pollok Park.

“Glesga” nightlife: sample the glamour and the grit with cocktails at the Rogano followed by a pint of heavy at the Horseshoe Bar.

New Lanark: a fascinating eighteenth century planned mill village set in a dramatic gorge.
