Hi Rough Guides experts,
Suzanne Ryan asks on Facebook: “Where in Italy is the best place to hike & eat please?”
Could you recommend any places for hiking where the food is rewarding also?
How about heading to the Dolomites? Choose from day-walks along well established trails to more ambitious hikes along the alte vie (literally “high ways”). During the summer you can spend the night in mountain huts (rifugi) which provide dorm accommodation, food and drink (and maybe even a hot shower).
Local dishes such as Tyrolean canederli (bread dumplings with speck), strangolapreti (bread and spinach gnocchi) and venison goulash – a world away from standard pasta and pizza offerings – are perfect for refuelling after a day’s strenuous walking and reflect the region’s blend of Italian and Germanic influences.
