It’s one of the cheapest ways to travel (and I love a good bargain) – but where is it safe and where shouldn’t you get into cars with strangers?
It’d be great to get some suggestions and hear some of your experiences of hitchhiking around the world!
My suggestion is Kenya – especially in the north. Many will ask for a small fee (which will be 10x less than what you’d pay on the bus – if there even is a bus) but generally it’ll be FREE!
Tell me your ideas!
I found Cuba really great for this. More often than not when you’d try and flag down a cab a normal car would stop and let you hop in for a small fee (which seemed like a bargain when you got to ride in a classic 1950s American car). It never felt unsafe doing this and we met some really interesting people along the way!
I was just in the Seychelles and hitchhiking is the method of choice. As a tourist you are picked up just as frequently as the locals and they are usually quite happy to take you where you are going. Most of the people that picked us up even drove out of their way to take us to our destination and at no cost whatsoever!
Lottie Gross I love the kindness of strangers! :)
I think this is quite common for tourists in the Istria region of Croatia. I was in Pazin, the regional capital, and the tourist office actually recommended I hitchhike to the village where I was staying that night. I had about 8km to go and planned to walk, but happily a very nice driver stopped and cut a couple km off of my journey! Since the area is close to Italy, a lot of people speak Croatian and Italian there, and with my knowledge of Croatian basically being the first three words in the back of my Rough Guides book, I spoke in broken Spanish and he spoke in Italian. No fee– he just drove me as far as he was going, and made sure I had directions for the rest of my journey. It was great!
I would hesitate before hitchhiking in the US. A lot of the safety issue depends on where you are, since you can get stuck trying to cover a very large distance and unable to get a ride, it’s illegal in some states, and, frankly, the prevalence of guns in parts of this country would make me very wary of getting in the car with a stranger. But it’s far from impossible, I would just do my research first– hitchwiki.org is a really helpful site.
Lottie Gross Excellent, great advice thanks!
