I’m planning a road trip with two mates around the Balkans in early September. We’ve probably got 2 weeks and are keen to take in Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania, but to make the flights work we’ll probably arrive in Croatia and leave from Greece. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as a rough itinerary?
Split – Mostar – Kronjic for rafting – Sarajevo – Bjelasnica for hiking – Kotor – Ulcinj – Berat – Butrint – Korfu
Well the itinerary looks great (and made me jealous). Here are some ideas you might not have considered yet…
In Mostar you should consider splashing out on a stay at this place: www.muslibegovichouse.com. I say ‘splash out’, but really it’s a bargain for the chance to spend the night in a national monument! Just outside of Mostar are some fascinating villages: Blagaj, Međugorje and Počitelj, the last of which is also handy for the Kravice Waterfalls.
Should you head out a little early, and you’re interested in film, check this out in Sarajevo: www.sff.ba/content.php/en/main. Then there’s ‘Boka Night’ which usually takes place late August in Kotor and sees the bay filled with boats (and the sky with fireworks).
Will you go to the Blue Eye when you’re in southern Albania? It’s definitely worth making the effort! And for a bit of daytime quiet once you hit Corfu, make for the beaches beyond the hamlets of Spartera and Dhragotina in the south.
Wow, some great tips here Neil – thanks! Hadn’t heard of Blue Eye before but looks well worth a trip.
