This rather entertaining Wanderlust article lists 10 types of people who shouldn’t backpack – my particular favourites being the “The person who can’t look after their finances” – FOMO really is a treacherous thing!
Have also met a few of those who “idealise travelling” – travelled with a couple of women who would not stop complaining that the food was too spicy and there was too much curry on the menu. We were in India :/
Have you ever met any of these backpackers? Share your stories
Adding to Jamie’s ‘it’s not what it was’ comment on the Wanderlust link, I have found that the brazen one-upmanship exhibited by some travellers/tourists/holidaymakers can be exasperating, but makes for great anecdotes after the event. This really does seem to happen everywhere, if you manage to chat to the right (or should that be ‘wrong’?) individuals.
You often wonder if the people with these tales of exploring a far-flung destination apparently before anyone else are really time-travelling contemporaries of Stanley, Livingstone & Speke…
Surely it’s healthier to live & let live by being enthusiastic about the experiences – whether past or upcoming – of other travellers, rather than let that weird ‘tick list’ type of competitiveness take over.
But, again, what would we write about if we didn’t encounter such intriguing characters?
Lottie Gross Well said Ed! :)
Kia Abdullah Seconded!
Person who can’t live in the moment – familiar sight.
I’ve travelled with some people who are the flip side of “The person who can’t look after their finances”, in other words they fall on the stingy side of the line. Why work for months to raise money to travel half way round the world just to decide when you get there don’t want to spend your money doing anything and would rather sit in your hostel room? Madness.
Lottie Gross Had this same experience – ended up saving SO much money because my travel companions refused to spend it on anything. I came home with enough for another holiday so I went away again :D silver lining I suppose!
K-Tanzanite Safaris Backpacking is a budget travel and most usually it is cheap holiday prefered by young people.
When you travel with children don't go backpacking....
