We had an interesting question from Shaun Robson on Twitter this week: “Did the Real Housewives of NYC ruin Morocco’s image for ever?”
You could ask the same question about that dire Sex And The City sequel (although don’t ask how I’ve seen it).
Has Morocco been portrayed well in film and TV?
Are there any good films or TV shows you could recommend for anyone wanting to get a sense of the country?
I think yes…
Captain Renault: What in heaven’s name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We’re in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
Rick: Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.
If you want to get an idea of the Moroccan landscape, or at least the landscape of the south, check out Lawrence of Arabia, Kundun, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven amongst others. All of these – whilst being “set” in places such as Tibet, Somalia and Jerusalem – were actually shot around Ouarzazate.
