Jody Woolcock asks on Twitter: “Me and my partner have always wanted to go to Morocco! We are a gay couple…how accepted is being gay out there?”
Not very, I’m afraid. Homosexuality is illegal and anyone caught indulging in gay sex, including tourists, could face jail. Tangier’s days as a gay resort are long gone, but there are a number of riads in Marrakesh and Fez run by gay couples and the former has the country’s only gay scene, albeit an understandably discreet one – the lesbian scene is virtually imperceptible, though.
travelmarrakech.co.uk has a section on gay-friendly places and you could also check out the (French-only) twitter.com/mithly, the Twitter feed of Morocco’s first, and only, gay magazine.
