Two questions actually: How can I best see Australia without renting/buying a car? Also, I am a med student in my final year, any connection to Flying Doctors? I would love to work with them.
Take your pick mate, coach, train, plane? You could walk but I wouldnt recommend it! As for the ROYAL flying doctors (sorry I’m a Brit and we cant resist a dig!) Try this website www.flyingdoctor.org.au/Careers/Stude...
You don’t need a car to explore Oz. Greyhound buses (www.greyhound.com.au) cover most intercity routes and offer a range of discount passes. Alternatively you can join one of the many multi-day tours offered by the likes of www.ozexperience.com, www.intrepidtravel.com and www.adventuretours.com.au. These are a good way to meet other travellers and often the only way to reach the more remote national parks if you don’t have your own wheels. Of course there are also plenty of budget airlines including jetstar and virgin australia if you’re on a tighter schedule.
If you make it to Alice Springs (and I suggest you do), check out the Royal Flying Doctor Service centre: www.rfdsalicesprings.com.au
