I am going to Costa Rica in November and would like to try and see a volcano erupting.
I’ve heard Arenal is currently resting, which other volcanos would be a good bet to try?
We’ve got a Top Volcanoes gallery coming up (look out for it over the weekend on our website), so your question is well-timed!
For its beauty, we’ve chosen Poás as THE Costa Rican volcano to visit… It’s active, and you’re bound to see exploding geysers and bubbling sulphuric pools. It’s not far from the capital, so makes a good day trip (though it can be busy). Otherwise, you could try Rincón de la Vieja or Tenorio volcanoes in Guanacaste, northwest Costa Rica, or Turrialba and Irazú in the Central Highlands. They’re all puffing away! Rincón de la Vieja is a pretty tough climb, but would be worth the hike for incredible views from the top.
Good luck – don’t get too close!
