MONTPELIER is the smallest state capital in the nation, with fewer than ten thousand inhabitants. Surrounded by leafy gardens, the golden-domed State House (Mon–Fri 8am–4pm) is well worth a free tour for its marble-floored and mural-lined hallways (guided tours on the half-hour July to mid-Oct Mon–Fri 10am–3.30pm, Sat 11am–2.30pm; t 802/828-2228). Copious information on accommodation, here and throughout the state, is available from the Capitol Region Visitors Center, opposite the State House at 134 State St (Mon–Fri 6am–6pm, Sat & Sun 9am–5pm; t 802/828-5981 or t 1-800/VERMONT, w http://www.vermontvacation.com). Good B&B rooms can be had at the central yet quiet Inn at Montpelier, 147 Main St (t 802/223-2727, w http://www.innatmontpelier.com; $131–160).
