Ferries dock two miles north of downtown on Tongass Highway; city buses stop hourly. Alaska Airlines serves the airport, which is on an island reached by half-hourly ferries ($5 return). The visitor centre is downtown at 131 Front St (daily 8am–5pm; t 1-800/770-3300, w http://www.visit-ketchikan.com), and for information about the surrounding Tongass forests visit the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, 50 Main St (summer 8am–5pm daily; t 907/228-6220, w http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass), a striking cedar-framed building which houses absorbing displays ($5) of the region’s natural habitats and native culture.
