Valdez’s accommodation gets snapped up pretty quickly and there’s no hostel, but a free phone outside the visitor centre connects with some of the fifty-plus B&Bs, or see w http://www.valdezbnbnetwork.com. Campers can choose between the central but busy Bear Paw RV Park (t 907/835-2530, w http://www.bearpawrvpark.com; $25), and the inconvenient Valdez Glacier Campground (t 907/873-4058; $10), five miles from town past the airport. The cheapest rooms are at L&L’s B&B, 533 W Hanagita St (t 907/835-4447, w http://www.lnlalaska.com; $61–80), with five comfortable shared bathrooms ten minutes’ walk from the centre, free bikes and a good breakfast. Upscale, there’s the Valdez Harbor Inn, 100 N Harbor Drive (t 1-888/222-3440, w http://www.valdezharborinn.com; $131–160), a renovated Best Western, with a great waterside location, where rooms have cable TV, DVD player, microwave, fridge and free wi-fi.
