Our authors traversed every corner of Turkey, from the bazaars of İstanbul to the resorts of the Turquoise Coast and the summit of Mount Nemrut. Here are some of their favourite experiences: A night on the town İstanbul’s Beyoğlu district is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, at its hedonistic best on Friday and Saturday evenings. Trails and peaks Head for the hills on a wonderful waymarked hiking trail, like the Lycian Way or St Paul Trail, or scale alpine Mount Kaçkar or biblical Mount Ararat. The open range Cappadocia’s big skies, rolling grasslands, plunging valleys and bizarre rock formations make superb horseriding country. The heart of Ionia Hire a car in the pretty Aegean resort of Kuşadası, and explore three captivating Graeco-Roman sites in a single day – Priene, Miletus and Didyma. Best beaches Iztuzu and Patara are vast enough to escape the crowds; bohemian Kabak is an out-of-the-way retreat; and Phaselis is backed by a fabulous ancient site. Ruins with a view The mountaintop sanctuary of Nemrut Dağı looks down over the Euphrates valley; the majestic Doric temple at Assos soars above the Aegean; and the ghost town of Ani stares across a dramatic gorge to Armenia. Lakeland pleasures Famed for its coastline, Turkey also holds some beautiful lakes. Head for the relaxed resort of Eğirdir or, more adventurously, for distant, high-altitude Lake Van.
