New Zealand is crisscrossed by thousands of kilometres of walking tracks. Eight of New Zealand’s finest tramps, and one river journey, have been classified as Great Walks; even the most well-trodden of these reveal magnificent natural wonders in the raw.

North Island

The Tongariro Northern Circuit (3–4 days;) Takes in magnificent volcanic and semi-desert scenery.
Waikaremoana Track (3–4 days;) A gentle circumnavigation of one of the country’s most beautiful lakes.
The Whanganui River Journey (2–4 days;) Best explored by canoe and a series of highly atmospheric short walks.

South Island

The Abel Tasman Coast Track (2–4 days) Skirts beaches and crystal-clear bays, ideally explored by sea kayak.
The Heaphy Track (4–5 days) Passes through the Kahurangi National Park, balancing subalpine tops and surf-pounded beaches.
The Kepler Track (4 days) Renowned for ridge walks and virgin beech forest.
Milford Track (4 days) The world-famous track accesses stunning glaciated alpine scenery and stupendous waterfalls.
The Rakiura Track (3 days) Follows the rainforest-bordered coast of Stewart Island and provides opportunities to see kiwi in the wild.
The Routeburn Track (3 days) One of the country’s finest walks, with quality time spent above the bushline.
