The industrial port of DEVONPORT, the terminal of the Bass Strait ferry, is not the most inspiring welcome into Tasmania. Indeed, were it not for the port on the Mersey River, the CBD feels more like that of a small town backed by a large, anonymous suburban spread. It’s hardly a destination in itself, but as a jumping-off point for Cradle Mountain, the Overland Track and the rugged west coast, Devonport makes a passable base and has developed a modest tourism infrastructure.
