Melbourne Museum

Share

Melbourne Museum is an ultramodern, state-of-the-art place with an immense blade-like roof and a greenhouse accommodating a lush fern gully flanked by a canopy of tall forest trees. The museum, whose eight galleries include one especially for kids, also houses a 400-seat amphitheatre, an IMAX cinema, a hall for major touring exhibitions, a study centre and a museum shop. Highlights include the Science and Life Gallery, which explores the plants and animals inhabiting the southern lands and seas; Bunjilaka, the Museum’s Aboriginal Centre, showcasing an extraordinary collection of Aboriginal culture from Victoria and further afield; and the Australia Gallery, focusing on the history of Melbourne and Victoria, which features the (stuffed) legendary racehorse Phar Lap. Also of interest are the Evolution Gallery, which looks at the earth’s history and holds an assortment of dinosaur casts, and the Forest Gallery, a living, breathing indoor rainforest containing over 8000 plants from more than 120 species, including 25m-tall gums, as well as birds, insects, snakes, lizards and fish.
