When it comes to finding somewhere to stay or eat, there isn’t much choice and it’s not a good idea to leave it too late in the day to look for a room; you’ll need an auto-rickshaw to find most of the hotels. The correct fare from the bus stand to Bedford Circle/YWCA is Rs30–40.

In the bazaar, the only commendable restaurants are Hotel Tamizhamgam (pronounced “Tamirangum”), on Mount Road near the bus stand, which is Coonoor’s most popular vegetarian “meals”-cum-tiffin joint. For good-value non-veg north Indian tandoori and Chinese food, try the Greenland hotel, further up Mount Road, while at Bedford Circle, the Dragon serves up more authentic and tasty Chinese dishes.

The Travancore Bank, on Church Road in Upper Ooty, near Bedford Circle, changes currency, but not always travellers’ cheques. Otherwise, the nearest place is the State Bank of India in Ooty.
