White Rhino!!! This amazing animal must be ‘loosing the will to live” in the wild due to the high risk of poaching and sadly, it may even become extinct in our lifetime. I would love to see it roaming around in its natural habitat.

  • The number of animals I would want to see in South Africa are endless. Botswana is home to so many well-known African animals; over 164 types of mammals, 550 bird species and 157 different reptiles. I have always dreamed of exploring the most isolated of villages in South Africa. I think that seeing giraffes would be absolutely incredible. I love how awkwardly complex they are! Their legs alone are over 6ft tall, they can run around 35mph, they fight each other by clashing necks with each other, they are strong enough to kill a lion, and last, they look hilarious when trying to reach water. They’re goofy, beautiful creatures that I would love to observe. There really isn’t anything else like them, and that’s what grabs me.

  • I would most love to see the Barbary Lion in the wild, sadly this would be impossible as they are unfortunately considered to be extinct in the wild. I have gone and visited the Barbary lions in the Zoo in Belfast plenty of times and have fallen in love with this majestic creature. Southern Africa is full of incredible animals that would be incredible to see and photograph, and if I had to choose an animal not extinct in the wild it would be the Scimitar Horned Oryx, or indeed any form of Oryx or Kudu, fantastic creatures. As a student in photography and graphic design graduating in 2 months it would be an incredible way to build my portfolio as a photographer with fantastic images and I would promise to keep a strong and informative diary of my trip along with a strong suite of images that I could post as a case story about Rough Guides on my return. I am certainly not the type to waste and opportunity and cite my love of adventures and travelling as my top interest on my CV. This opportunity would mean the world to me, and also indeed be my first trip outside continental Europe, an adventure I am itching to undertake once I finish university.

    Thank you, Steve.

  • Ever since I was a little girl, have been mesmerized by the wild elegance of the cheetah. Perhaps it’s the way they move. The cheetah’s muscles remind me of the breathtaking beauty of an acrobat or a dancer. They have a fierce poetry about them, in all their rarity and wildness. When watching them in slow motion, I cannot tear my eyes away.

Or maybe I love them because of the stories. As a child, I read folk stories about how the cheetah got its spots, and the sad stories of why the cheetah has tear marks upon its face. In the many variations of those stories, the cheetah was too different from the other big cats for them to accept her as one of them without judgement. Her tears were burned upon her face. Or she painted the tears there as a reminder of her sadness.

In my favorite version of the tale, the cheetah was not given the same “gifts” as the other big cats, but she discovered her own gift. She could practically fly across the ground with unsurpassed eloquence. At the end of the story, she accepted herself, and she blossomed in her own unique beauty.

So in truth, it would be my privilege to see this beautiful endangered animal because it gives me hope.

  • Gorilla – my favourite travel book is about a guy who rode a motorbike from London to South Africa and back again. In one scene he’s on the verge of giving up – he’s exhausted, the bike is stuck in mud and he’s miles from any help – then at that point a huge silver back appears from the trees beside him and pauses in front of the guy and his bike. They look at each other, and then the gorilla turns and continues his journey. Suddenly the guy finds himself ready to try again as the feeling of being in Africa and seeing such an incredible animal reminds him of how lucky he is to have the chance to be there. He drags the bike out of the mud and continues his journey. This image has stuck with me ever since I read the book – I would love to be able to have the chance to spend time in the jungle and be face to face with such an incredible animal.

  • I would like to see Elephants in the wild most. These gentle giants are, to me, one of the most impressive animals in the universe. On one hand, they are incredibly huge, powerful, and dangerous, capable of massive destruction in an instant. However, they are also intensely capable of sensitivity and connection. The family units that Elephants create with each other are life long and extend over generations and huge amounts of physical travel. When a baby is born, everyone rallies around it to make sure that everyone in the family, especially the baby, is protected. They also will never forget one another or an event that happens to them, making them incredibly complex. I just have so much awe and admiration for them and would love to see them up close (but not too close)!!

Although we have had a diverse range of fantastic travel experiences, we have yet to step onto the African continent and so my promise remains unfulfilled. Her infectious love of these elusive, beguiling creatures has rubbed off on me and so the cheetah tops my list for two reasons. Firstly, I believe witnessing the tenacity and speed of these rare animals against the vast backdrop of an African landscape would be awe inspiring. Secondly, it would be a true pleasure to see the happiness and wonderment on my girlfriend’s face upon spotting a wild cheetah for the first time. The ultimate situation would be to see a mother and baby gliding effortlessly through the ocean. I would go as far to see my life would be complete on encountering a whale shark.

  • I love all animals and to see anything in the wild would bring a tear to my eye. It would be a magical moment. The elephant though would be at the top of my wish list, they are so big but so gentle and the way they move with grace. There beautiful big feet and wrinkly skin. Lovely creatures.

  • I would love to see a leopard or even rarer, a pair of leopards. They are so shy and reclusive that they are rarely seen. They hide up in trees in the shadows of the leaves and branches or in the long grass, so well concealed by their camouflaged bodies. They often hunt at night so to see a daytime encounter of active leopards would be awesome.

  • The wild dogs of Africa – a breed under great threat of extinction. These beautiful mottled ‘painted wolves’ are very social animals, caring for the young, the elderly and sick as a group. Yet apparently they are one of most successful hunters with their ability to hunt their prey in packs and travel at up to 40 mph for great distances. No wonder something like 80% of wild dog hunts end in a kill. A truly special animal

  • Any and all big cats-the bigger and more cat-like the better. The very essence of every feline from domesticated kitties to the rippling suppleness of cheetahs and leopards excites awe and admiration in me at every encounter!

  • I would love to see an African Elephant. I have been working in Thailand and have had the pleasure of seeing Asian Elephants here, but only in captivity. It would be an incredible experience to see the difference between African and Thai Elephants, and to see one living happily in the wild would be amazing!

  • I had the opportunity to photograph my first safari in 1993 the 26 March on my birthday. I was an experienced fashion photographer so I decide to photograph all animals as if they were fashion models! ..But my best discovery was photographing the elusive lazy lions on my last day. Being surrounded by so many cars and always being left behind or the lions leaving, I instructed our driver to drive away for about a mile and to stop and wait the lions arrived and stopped in front of our Landrover! When the other cars were catching with us I told the driver to move again ahead. Every time we stopped the lions cached with us and I got the best pictures of any one in the pack behind. In Africa predict the animal moves ahead to get the best pictures. I had the best pictures from all the 150 photographers in only ten days with only five days shooting. I had Canon and Minolta(now is SONY) gear including a Minolta 300/2.8 lens and a Canon 200/2.8 lens. I used over 100 rolls of Kodachrome film
All mi pictures were super sharp and I shot mostly with the animals back or side lit.

  • There are so many animals I would love to see in their natural habitat, it is hard to choose just one! I’ve always dreamed of taking a photo safari to Africa (as a young girl and adolescent I thought being a photojournalist would be the most amazing career)! If I have to pick only one, I think seeing a lion in the wild would be incredible! They are so powerful, majestic, and beautiful!

  • Cheetahs are rare and beautiful cats, well known for their incredible speed. While they are the fastest animals on earth and decent hunters, it’s difficult for them to stop their kills from getting scavenged by aggressive hyenas as well as lions. Their preference for wide open spaces also puts them in competition with man and cattle. Cheetahs are not easy to spot on safari, only around 12,000 remain in the wild, spread through eastern and southwestern Africa. Your best chance of seeing them is in Tanzania’s Serengeti or in various reserves in Namibia.

  • It sounds a bit odd but I’d like to see hyenas and/or wild dogs. Everyone hears about elephants and lions etc.
Hyenas have a complicated history in Africa, which makes them more interesting. Wild dogs because they can only be found in Africa. :)

  • PENGUINS! Ever since I was very little I have been in love with penguins! Not only are they cute and fun to watch, they are some of the most loyal animals on the planet. They mate for life, and the sacrifices they make for their family are nothing short of amazing. I used to go to Sea World and watch the penguins for hours. After learning the horrible things done by SeaWorld I refuse to go there anymore. To see my beloved penguins in the wild would be my wildest dream come true!
