Travelling to Egypt

Would November be a good time to be visiting Egypt or, given current events, should I not travel there for the time being?

  • It’s always best to get information on the current situation for tourists from the FCO:

    https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt

Their advice is sometimes a little too cautious, but it’s always best to get the facts from there and then make an educated decision from that I find! Enjoy your trip, safe travels!

It’s ALWAYS way too cautious Lottie. They instantly slap do not travel bans on entire countries and regions when it may only be a very small part that may be experiencing trouble. Unfortunately the travel and insurance industries treat this advice as gospel.

I agree it is always best to make an educated decision based on the FCO advice, but I would add only after doing your own local research on the reality of the situation too.

I wouldn’t say it’s always too cautious – their travel advice for areas in Afghanistan is pretty accurate! :)

Also Sonja – BBC news often do interviews with western tourists/expats in destinations that are coming under a lot of media attention. It’s worth checking on their website or watching the news.

    Good luck!

Haha, fair enough Afghanistan is hardly the place for a little cultural immersion right now, but I cite as examples of heavy handed overreaction by the FCO the entire Egyptian unrest situation and the acts/threats of piracy in Semporna (a very small part of Sabah) that caused the ENTIRE countries of pen. Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo to be declared unsafe for travel and a lot of travel boards to be filled with questions such as ‘is it safe to go to Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia for a fair amount of time. I can give dozens more examples.

It is good to keep an eye on gov.warnings (if only to check your insurance is still valid), but I wouldn’t let it stop me going somewhere on the basis of that alone.

I guess it just depends on how comfortable you are with the situation in that country at that time. It’s a very personal thing, safety.

True. But more common sense and less mass hysteria is needed. Even Branson is criticising FCO advice! http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/mobile/?articleID=2000094524&story_title=Kenya-sir-richard-branson-slams-travel-advisories-to-kenya
