Top 10 British TV locations to visit

My lovely little market hometown of Wallingford, Oxfordshire is often featured in British sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. In a survey conducted by Freeview, the public voted on the top TV locations to visit in Britain and this was the top ten:

1. Port Isaac, Cornwall (Doc Martin)

2. Outer Hebrides, Scotland (An Island Parish)

3. Highclere Castle, Berkshire (Downton Abbey)

4. Cardiff, Wales (Doctor Who)

5. West Bay, Dorset (Broadchurch)

6. Aidensfield, North Yorkshire Moors (Heartbeat))

7. Holmfirth Yorkshire (Last of the Summer Wine)

8. Barry Island, Wales (Gavin & Stacey)

9. Box and Neston villages (Lark Rise to Candleford)

10. Minnie’s Boutique Chigwell, Essex (TOWIE)

What are your thoughts? Have you got a favourite British TV location?

Cardiff. Not just Doctor Who, but also Torchwood, Casualty, Holby Central and Sherlock Holmes. It’s like Los Angeles here sometimes!

  • Amazing. I thought Casualty was filmed in Bristol though?

  • At extreme risk of revealing my old-biddy telly watching tendencies… What about Oxford as featured in Lewis? And the villages and countryside of Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns in Midsomer Murders? I often get excited when I see a lovely market set up in my home town of Thame, only to discover that it’s a Midsomer market, everything’s plastic and they’re definitely not encouraging browsers…

I feel your pain Clare – I once got incredibly confused when all the signs and fronts of shops in my hometown were changed for a Midsomer Murder set! I thought I’d gone away for the week and come back to a whole new set of shops – it was actually rather disappointing!

  • For soap lovers, surely London’s East End (Eastenders), Manchester (Coronation Street) and the Yorkshire Dales (Emmerdale). They are part of British popular culture whether we like it or not!
