Northern France

We have 4 whole days to discover northern France. We are heading over on the night ferry Newhaven to Dieppe as we live nearby. We are keen mountain bikers, runners and hikers and would like to spend the days enjoying the out door activities. We are hoping to pack the van up with the bikes and camp for these days (end of march/april)…but this might be ambitious for this time of year. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to head to, camp sites to camp at, activities to do? Many thanks

Hi Mel

Fingers crossed the weather will be good to you! Who knows what the spring has in store for the UK and Europe…

You can but hope – and camping is of course a great way to explore the countryside and keep the budget to a minimum. The coastline west of Dieppe (known as The Côte d’Albâtre) is very attractive, and worth walking/cycling: Varengeville is a lovely, rural village with some magnificent gardens, while Etretat has a wonderful beach.

There’s a campsite south of Dieppe called Camping Vitamin (, which isn’t particularly remarkable, but might be convenient for you.

Campsites on the Côte d’Albâtre include Camping de Reneville (, which has great views and is based near the little town of Fécamp. Otherwise, there’s a Camping Municipal at Etretat (tel: 02 35 27 07 67).

It might be worth heading to the tourist offices in either Dieppe, St-Valéry-en-Caux, Fécamp or Etretat to enquire about outdoor activities and the companies that offer them. Or look online: they have plenty of information on their respective tourist websites.

Hope that helps. The brand new Rough Guide (edition 13) is out in bookshops, and shortly via this website, and includes lots of great suggestions to eat and drink…sounds like you’ll be needing sustenance after all that activity! Enjoy your trip, and here’s hoping for no rain.
