North Cornwall Walks

So, I’m not really a walker, but want to make the best of seeing some of the Atlantic Coast, going North & South from Polzeath.

Suggestions for walks would be great, as well as any hidden gems worth visiting in that part of the World much appreciated.

I’m looking at visiting in early March, while it’s still cold and before all the tourists arrive.

A short walk – but absolutely stunning – is the one along the Southwest Coast Path from Trebarwith Strand, a little north of Polzeath, to Tintagel Castle (and beyond depending on how much time you have).

There’s a little stall by the beach selling fantastic fresh doughnuts back at Trebarwith so you can reward yourself when you’ve finished.

  • Hi mywilfing,

There is a beautiful and reasonably short walk north of Polzeath (again on the Coast Path) to Doyden Point. There are spectacular views to the isles of The Mouls and Newland (both inhabited by seals and puffins) and you can also visit sandy Lundy Bay en route.

From nearby Padstow you could also try the Camel Trail, a popular cycle path that follows the route of an old railway line, with great opportunities for birdwatching along the way; the section between Padstow and Dunmere is open to walkers and horse riders. If you’re feeling sprightly you could check out the Saints’ Way too – a 30 mile path across the Cornish peninsula from Padstow to Fowey. The tourist office in Padstow should have maps and suggested itineraries for both routes.

  • If you are interested in Thomas Hardy there is a lovely walk inland through the Valency Valley to the church of St Juliot’s, where Thomas Hardy met and fell in love with his future wife Emma Gifford.
