Generally Egypt is a safe place to travel. Not nearly as bad as it used to be.

You will however experience a lot of “salesmen” trying to sell you something or some sort of service. A lot of them will try and befriend you and then later try and get some money out of you.

In general Egypt is very well equip for travelers. They have the tourist police that is always willing to help.

For ladies they might find some of the men bothersome, but just simply ignore them and move on.

  • What with recent events in Egypt, I’d check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s website for advice on safety in particular areas:

  • Take the foreign office advice with a pinch of salt and a dose of common sense though, as they can be highly overreactive. Egypt is a very safe place to travel to. I was there during the actual uprising a few years ago, and I felt very safe then too, you know why? Because I didn’t wander into the very small part of the very large city where the protests were taking place!

Although this article is about the recent protests in Bangkok, the advice is still very relevant to any country, including Egypt http://bemusedbackpacker.com/2014/01/22/a-call-to-calm-dont-let-the-bangkok-protests-scare-you-away/

Also look here for some general advice on keeping yourself safe http://bemusedbackpacker.com/2013/11/11/solo-female-backpacker-safety-tips/

I hope it eases some of your worries.

  • The answer is “yes.” Egypt has always been one of the most loved tourist destinations for European holidaymakers.
New Egyptian minister of internal affairs, Mr Mansour Al Esewy, recently announced that all the policemen, including the tourism police, are back policing streets as before. All museums, monuments and archaeological sites have reopened for the tourists, reverting back to their traditional opening times
Travellers are advised to read up on their chosen destination, ensuring they know of any necessary precautions before arriving in that country – this includes fco.gov.uk Travel advice
Be especially careful around crowds, taking care to keep valuables out of view and/or reach of pickpockets
EU nationals should avoid demonstrations and carry passport identification at all times.

  • I haven’t been to Egypt yet but according to some colleagues who have reach Egypt, it is indeed a safe place for tourists. They value their tourism so they ensure quality protection for everyone. The pyramid is the first place I want to see when I get there.
