Holidaying in northern England

We’re looking for a summer break somewhere pretty and peaceful, and hopefully cheap! We have a car, and a 4 year old, and need to get there from London. We were thinking Yorkshire Dales, or Lake District… any little places to suggest?

Depends what you like to do, but the Eden Valley in Eastern Cumbria is a relatively quiet part of the area. It is between the Lake District and Dales so you can drive to either or southern Scotland for the day. Landscape is mellower (red sandstone buildings, rounded hills) than the Lake District, there is the Appleby horse fair if you go in June, Settle-Carlisle railway, prehistoric henges, couple of nice market towns, (smaller) historic houses, and despite a major road running through it it is a bit off the beaten track.
