Help!! 3 WEEK TRIP TO TURKEY?

Hello dear travelers –

I will have 3 – 4 weeks to spend in Turkey with my family. I am planning on ~ 1 week in Istanbul and then ~2-3 weeks on the coast.

**Any advise of a nice region on the coast to rent a villa/house for 2-3 weeks?
*Time of travel – late May to early June
*Travel with: toddler to grandma
*Ideal requests: avoid high-rise, shiny hotels; villa/house walking distance to restaurants, beach etc; sandy beach nearby; good location for day trips to see other locations

I haven’t traveled much since I was very young – so would appreciate any advise you may have! Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hi Nasti,

Lucky you. I spent three weeks travelling around Turkey for Rough Guides in May and would love to be going back. Late May is an ideal time: hot and sunny but not unbearable.

Istanbul is fantastic. There’s so much going on, but it is pretty hectic. I’d suggest taking a boat over the Asian side for a quieter exploration on one or two of the days, Especially if you’re bringing relatives of all ages with you.

I can vouch for anywhere from Antalya upwards on the coast. The place is littered with beautiful ports such as Kas and hidden gems like the valley of Olympos. Alternatively, Fethiye has everything you need and is ideally placed for day trips: http://www.roughguides.com/destinations/europe/turkey/turquoise-coast/fethiye/

This should offer up some inspiration: http://www.roughguides.com/destinations/europe/turkey/things-miss/

Finally, and it’s a bit out of the way, but I’d heartily recommend Cappadocia. There’s nowhere quite like it.

  • Lucky you is right! I spent 4 weeks in Turkey a few years ago and it is such a wonderful country. I might cut the time in Istanbul and spend more time along the coast and in Cappadocia. Ephesus is great and the town of Selçuk is a great base. The Bella hotel is a good choice for staying. They are wonderful there. I’d think about heading to the Marmaris area. Bozburun, Datça are great places to explore and relax…enjoying the coast. Don’t miss Patara the longest stretch of sandy beach. You can stay in Gelemis. Hotel Pataris is inexpensive, has a pool and great views. There are lots of ruins nearby to explore. Olympos should not be missed. I stayed in Çirali which also has a nice beach. You can then go to Chimaera where the flames come out of the rocks. And yes, Cappadocia is fabulous. Be sure to spend at least 3 to 4 days there (if not more). It’s so cool.

    Hi there Lynne,

Thanks so much for your advice. I had to remove the email address from your comment as it contravened out Community Guidelines. (Read here: http://bit.ly/18EwoQv).
