Croatia and Beyond

Myself and a friend are heading to Hideout Festival in July. The festival takes place on Zrce Beach which is about 3.5km from Novalja on the island of Pag. After the festival we are planning to spend around 6-8 weeks travelling around Eastern Europe and would like to visit various places in Croatia and neighbouring countries and are trying to figure out the best route for us to take.

We would love to visit Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb, Llubjana, Bratislava, Budapest, Sarajevo and a few places in Montenegro before potentially making our way to Greece.

Do you have any ideas on the most efficient route that we could take, bearing in mind that the trip is definitely starting on the island of Pag at the beginning of July?

Also, if you have any other recommendations of places we should visit while travelling in and around Croatia, please let us know. We are very open to suggestions.

My recommendation would be to go in a clockwise direction. I a tip would be to include the Istrian Peninsula which is on your way anyway. This has really spectacular coastline and the towns are very historic and full of roman architecture. The towns are really nice to wander around and enjoy the cafes and the evenings. There are plenty of beaches with kayaking, bikes etc etc.
I would say from Pag then Zadar, Plitvice, Rijeka/Istia Peninsula, Llubjana, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Mostar, Dubrovnik then Montenegro. You could also get in the religious town of Madjugore near Mostar if you wanted.
Obviously this could be tweeked a bit to go from Llubjana, Zagreb, Bratislava, Budapest and then Bosnia.
Sarajevo is a nice city with plenty of scars from the war but it has the modern side and a good night life. I didn’t find Zagreb great and it was probably my least favourite out of the 4 or 5 Croatian cities I visited.
I put up what I found good from my experience of Croatia on my website which may help you. Includes details, costs which may give you some new ideas. I haven’t got around to the other cities although I have been to a lot of them.

I hope this helps
